OMAHA BEACH and the AMERICAN CEMETARY

This is how we slept....
With little exception we find ourselves asleep very quickly once tucked into our hammocks. We have had beautiful weather and have not had to put up our coverings over our hammocks to protect us from the elements.

Today was an emotional day and a wonderful education. The museum attached to the American Cemetary is first-class and the time spent there before going through the Cemetary would be highly recommended. Last year our family met Ysidor S. a D-Day survivor. He and his wife were in Raleigh for a D-Day reunion. They were clearly two of the sweetest people we have ever met. Steve helped in Ysidor's transportation to and from the D-Day events and we fell in love with this beautiful couple. They have kept in touch with us, so when we decided to make this trip we wanted to honor Ysidor and asked if there was anyone specific he would like us to pay our respects to. He mentioned his Sergeant, Daniel Tremper, who gave the ultimate sacrifice to liberate Europe and protect our country. We went to his grave site, paid our respects, and laid some decorations of love. We will always remember him, and you Ysidor!!!!
We had the most wonderful tour guide, Karen, who picked Aynsleigh to adorn the site of a female ( I think one of only four) buried here in the Cemetary.  Our sweet guide, who has spent her life in this town, advocated for her street to be named after this female who lost her life a few months after D-Day when her Red Cross plane went down. She was affectionately known as " Donut Dolly", as she prepared spirits for the boys supplying gum, cigarettes and donuts to the troops. Donuts on D-Day will be our new family tradition as we give thanks to freedom and justice for all!
An interesting bit of information, all headstones are either a cross or Star of David. By 1944 religion was removed from dog tags as the US feared a Jewish military member could be placed in a concentration camp if taken prisoner. Because of this the authenticity of ones religion might not be correct.
Here is how I identified remains are marked...

We returned for Taps and the lowering of the flag at five thirty.
