Heading to the Atlas Mountains

We left the desert slowly. I have long loved the Tuareg people and their indigo head scarves. My fascination started when I bought the kids some necklaces that resembled surfboards (in shape) that were made by the Tuareg. Our first homeschool study was actually a pretty extensive one on the people.

I bounced from stall to stall buying even more Tuareg jewelry and looking everywhere for a gorgeous blue caftan similar to the one our guide had a few days ago.

It is a rather expensive piece with special detail on the back. Thankful once again for Adam who seemed to know exactly what I wanted and had shop keepers pulling items out from nowhere left and right. I have a pretty nice collection of Tuareg jewelry now and bought an old Berber ring that I have been told is over 50 years old. It’s real worn so I have little doubt.

Before driving to the mountains we stopped at a nice town, outside of Zagora, for a beautiful dinner in a location where tourist are dropped off in droves. It’s beauty was unmatched, almost too beautiful if such a thing. The owner of the small resort (Riad Lemane) was the owner of the place where I bought my caftan!

As we left the restaurant Adam found s small hedgehog in the wild. It’s only my second time seeing one in the wild, my first was as a child in France.

With food in our belly we headed to the Atlas Mountains!

We made it to the next town at the base of the Atlas mountains called Ouarzazate.  Adam secured us a great hotel called Rose Valley Hotel! He wheeled and sealed all nine of us in a room for a decent rate. The hotel was tucked behind a larger resort but appeared to be more modern.  The hotel owner seemed skeptical but instantly fell in love with the children. He walked them around like a proud grandpa!!!!

Tomorrow we will enjoy this town, I’ll continue to shop in a way I never have...
