Day 2 - Vila do Bispo to Carrapateira

Today’s walk had a few frustrating points. The path is impeccably marked so really nothing to do with that. We were confused on how to leave the town. It can get difficult because you have marks going in BOTH directions, you also have marks for a few different trails. I take full responsibility for the errors today but it thankfully we were gifted with great views and a nice picnic spot! Keep in mind where we are you have the Historical Way with “ circuits” ( wonderful treats) of Fisherman’s Way.

We were not far from our wonderful starting point when we passed a house with dogs, roosters and a dog that looked like our Boo. Steve had just informed me that Boo is not doing well, we actually thought we were going to have to put him down in January but thankfully he rebounded under our vets care and meds! At this house we had a conversation about how Boo resembled this dog, enough where we noticed it’s coat and described it well....

There were hang gliders gliding today in what appeared to be gliders you sit in vs. hold with your arms. It was a great hike. We estimated an eight hour day...

At about four hours I said,” that dog looks like Boo”......wondering if anyone can predict the situation, we were right back near our starting point!!!!!!!! - ughhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

It was Aynsleigh whose brain was a second ahead of mine who noticed. I think we were probably a good three hours into the Fisherman way on the water and saw a south bound route on an easier trek of the Historical Way and took it.  Thankfully we were only at about four, a fixable situation, of course NOT needing to repeat our Fisherman’s Way we headed up the road North.  I seemed most bummed about our situation (...initially).  Thankfully, the mom of the hikers who are with us, while new to the Camino, handled it best as she giggled, which helped the situation-- as I felt and was totally responsible.  We have been using google Earth, and about 3-4 hours still to go, but we had that amount to go anyway so that should have helped with my feelings (though it didn’t)..
.
About an hour and a half down the road, google maps offered an off road option that would “add four minutes”. This was a no brainer.   The sun going down was a concern and I had my two young girls safety to think about. This path was interesting, clearly marked but lead us on a path filled with twigs for about one minute.  When the sun had gone down, it led us down two large muddy hills that some chose to scoot on their rears, while others like me decided to take small sideways steps. Then with about an hour to go, water covered our path.  In daylight we would see how to get around, but at night it was more difficult and for a second I feared, "could we get by?"  Of course we could, but we were tired, our brains weren’t thinking on a full tank. Thankfully, we had a power charger as my phone was close to dead. Our google Earth a new technology for me had this route perfectly laid out down to the minute of when we would arrive. The path did add more than four minutes, I think it added an hour...

Our spot, that I pre-booked, was EXACTLY what we needed!!! It was a kilometer out of town, walking on the road. Bronwyn was in tears for the last hour and half of it, due to walking sticks clicking around her. I urged her to stay upfront with me and tried to explain if the digging of the sticks in the ground helped others to make it through this she’d have to handle it. Anyone who has followed my blogs knows the sound of walking sticks kills us, it’s our kryptonite!

Our hostel was dreamy!!!!
It had an Alice and Wonderland theme and the girls were instantly elated at the site. To my surprise, my name was on the door, as I had feared since I had not prepaid the room it could have been given away... but seeing my name was such a wonderful site.... this was our home for the night!!!!

Gigi a black cat came into our bungalow and slept with me this night. The next day was my birthday so this was a huge gift!
