Day 1 - Sagres to Vila do Bispo

This is our route!

It divides into Historical Way and into the Fisherman’s Way, and depending where you start you are able to have a dose of both routes at the beginning or end. We decided to go in the reverse direction, South to North, but almost everyone goes North to South. I think since I’m always heading to Santiago that was my thought process.

I must confess, as you read this we have successfully completed the RV, my guidebooks are safe with our new “family” in Sintra and some of my notes with specific details are there with it. I’m one to “just walk” and not sit there with my nose in a book... so name dropping places etc... has never been one of my best skills in sharing.

My opinion now having done this is I would go South to North... the last day (North) is grueling sand and rock surfaces of craters, deep craters. Don’t get me wrong all equally stunning and beautiful, but if we started that way, I fear we’d have had some huge potential for injury. The downside of walking the opposite way of others is towards the middle of your day you are stopped by every pilgrim eager to hear what you’ve done and where you’ve come from. I have the gift of gabbing and love such interaction, but if you need to be somewhere this is time consuming.

We woke up and had a lovely little breakfast and had a decision to make, taxi or walk the extra two hours to Sagres. To me it was a no brainer, walk of course! I was happy when the hikers with us felt the same. We set off, but not fast because I had to stop and walk off road every time a little trail tempted me.

The below pictures are from Sagres to Cabo da St. Vincent, before our official trail even started!

The starting point is at Cabo de Saint Vincent, a little over two hours we were there!  There were food trucks there and we had the most amazing Bratwurst with mustard there. Still hungry, our small group set up a picnic there near the gated off lighthouse. The walk IF you stepped off the road was stunning! However, once the RV started and we turned the corner North, those views were every bit as fascinating.

I hop off trail more than I should... I’m glad I do as there are many images we would have missed, great, beautiful, wonderful, amazing views!

The kids call this “taking the path of defiance”.

These are images taken after the true starting point, but many are taken by going off trail a few feet...
This was a MARVELOUS day. We turned up at a wonderful hostel exhausted! Aren’t we always every night? I had prebooked thankfully as we watched them turn away two girls.  It had a great kitchen, wonderful pool, great showers and wonderful bed linens!
