We woke at 8, having set the alarm for 7:30. We tried to sleep in although Basque Grandma was a expecting us for breakfast at 8. We were at her door at 8:05 and super excited. Seems we upset our sleeping companions beauty rest as the second our alarm went off they all kept mooing and seemed determined if we woke them up they were going to keep us up.
This night was wonderful!
We walked to the house where our Basque Grandma Josephine had a huge spread out on the table.
Bread, croissants, jelly, cheese, sausage....milk, hot chocolate, juice....everything imaginable. The food just kept coming, I was embarrassed at how much the kids scarfed down but in true grandma style she appeared to love every minute of it. She shared she had been up since 5:00 reading her bible and went to unlock the church.
She packaged us up several meats and breads, she insisted we take it.
Michel, her son, showed up to reiterate how to get out on trail. Ends up we would pass his campground about a kilometer away and turn uphill to get back on the Camino. We walked into the campsite, this campground was the best of the best, we will definitely return one day to stay there.
He asked where we were staying tonight as we shared our destination would be Hendaye, the end of the GR10 and the beginning of our Norte. We have been living for this start as the Norte has always been calling us. He very subtly, soft spoken said, " I have a home, a seaside home, in Hendaye that you are welcome to use. He also said we were more than welcome to go by the campsite and take a shower. He asked what time we thought we would make it to Hendaye and I guessed between 5 and 6. He said he'd be there!
A few pictures of the day...
When we get to the summit we have a special family chant...
We showed up at exactly 5:00 and he drove up at exactly the time we approached. It had started to rain, a cold rain and we were so thankful for this generous offering. His home was beautiful, huge tub, great kitchen and we went to the grocery store to make a wonderful dinner to celebrate our half way point. Only half way!!!!! Hard to believe but we are so excited to start the Norte. We headed out to finish the last few meters of the walk, the GR 10 ends on the beach.
Hot baths!!!! Great dinner, wonderful breakfast and we would be ready for the Norte!!!!
Thank you Michel and family for your enormous generosity!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will ALWAYS remember this special family who fueled us when we needed it most!!!!!
Love you all bunches!!!!!
Dog on the blog bossed us around as we walked by....
