The Medina of Marrakech

I had typed this post and for some reason it disappeared. A second write up can never capture what my original one did.

Getting lost in the winding walks of the medina is half the fun. We spent six nights in Marrakech and by the end I felt like a champ dealing with vendors. I had my methods, waited on most purchases, kept good notes on quoted prices and was pretty good about realizing when they could go no lower. I was amazed how a vendor could recognize me days later and know exactly what item I had been interested in, and their attempt to try to tempt me again.

There was a piece of pottery I really wanted and a guy wouldn’t come down on it, I played it cool by walking back infront of him hours later praying he’d come chase me down. When he did I pretended I didn’t remember what I had lived in his shop. It was a unique piece, different than anything in his store... and I wanted it so much but his original price was just way to high.

It’s funny that several shop keepers noticed my incredible resemblance to Shakira ( laugh laugh).  I entertained myself by wondering why only people trying to sell me something notice the resemblance? You don’t by chance think all blond middle age women in the Medina are called “ Shakira”....

I found one vendor I really liked a lot, he was very calm, designed his own stuff and I purchased many beautiful items from him. I’m not normally a souvenir buying person but I always knew I’d drop some money in Morocco. There are marble doors that just might haunt me forever....

Look out when the shop keeper offers you sit and have tea with them, money is about to exchange hands and I loved these moments of drinking tea with someone who I was about to buy some lovely item from.
